‘I had wine, too much wine’ – Paulo Costa reveals he consumed an entire bottle of wine ahead of his fight against Israel Adesanya last year
Costa suffered a second round knockout loss at the hands of ‘the Last Stylebender’.
Paulo Costa might have laid the ghost of his loss against Israel Adesanya at UFC 253 to rest. But streaks of that terrible night still seems to be haunting him. The Brazilian was defeated for the first time in his MMA career in only the second round, by a vicious KO blow from ‘The Last Stylebender’.
Speaking about that loss in his YouTube channel, Paul Costa revealed that he had fought on a hangover and that he had slept late. He further went on to say that being hungover was his own fault and also that he shouldn’t have overdrunk.
‘Keep in mind that the fight happens at 9 a.m‘
Paulo Costa was quoted as saying, (translated to English) “I was kind of drunk (when) I fought, maybe, on a hangover. I couldn’t sleep because of the cramps. Keep in mind that the fight happens at 9 a.m., we have to wake up at 5 to get ready, stretch, wrap the hands. The UFC told us to wake up at 5 in the morning to go to the arena to fight. I hadn’t slept until 2:30.” [via BJPenn.com and MMA Fighting]
He continued, “It was my mistake and I don’t blame anyone else, it was something I chose, but, in order to try to sleep, because I had to sleep since I was awake for 24 hours, I had wine, too much wine, a bottle to try to blackout. I had a glass and didn’t work. Two glasses, it didn’t work. Half bottle didn’t work. I had it all.” [via BJPenn.com and MMA Fighting]
Paulo Costa must now focus on what is at hand. He takes on Robert Whittaker on the 17th of April – a match which will see the victor cement their place as the number 1 ranked middleweight contender.
As for Izzy, he takes on Jan Blachowicz in a few days. He will be making his light-heavyweight debut, and will be looking forward to becoming a two-division champion!
