Belal Muhammad steps in to replace Khamzat Chimaev, will take on Leon Edwards on the 13th of March
The fight will be for five rounds, headlining the UFC event.
It looks like welterweight Leon Edwards has finally found an opponent, after Belal Muhammad, agreed to replace Khamzat Chimaev in a five-round main event, scheduled on the 13th of March. Although, a huge gap in the rankings separate the two (Leon Edwards – number 3 and Belal Muhammad -number 13), Edwards will be more than happy to get back to the octagon, after having not fought in almost 2 years. A win here can get Leon Edwards really close to a title shot.
The news was first broken by Brett Okamoto of ESPN, who took to Twitter to reveal that – a fresh off UFC 258 Belal would be taking on the long-absent Leon Edwards.
‘If Edwards wins this, it’s gotta be a title shot next, right?‘
Brett Okamoto tweeted, “Five days removed from a win last weekend, Belal Muhammad (@bullyb170) has agreed to replace Khamzat Chimaev in a five-round main event against Leon Edwards (@Leon_edwardsmma) on March 13 per sources … And if Edwards wins this, it’s gotta be a title shot next, right? Gotta be.“
Leon Edwards then acknowledged Belal Muhammad for stepping in to take up the fight. He tweeted, “Respect for Belal for stepping up when no one else would. March 13 I show I am the best in the world. #StrapSeason“
“No guts no glory MAIN EVENT MUHAMMAD“, a pumped Belal tweeted, announcing his soon-to-come main event arrival.
Leon Edwards, last fought at UFC Fight Night on the 20th of July, 2019, against Rafael dos Anjos. He won the fight via. unanimous decision. And, the man who had been on an eight-fight win streak, went missing due to various reasons like COVID restrictions and that ‘Khamzat Chimaev Saga’.
Belal Muhammad, on the other hand, is coming off a victory against Dhiego Lima, as recently as UFC 258. He is currently on a four-fight win streak, and is fast-rising in the welterweight rankings.
