Lawrence Okolie knocks out Krzysztof Głowacki to win the WBO Cruiserweight title; wants Mairis Briedis next!

With that win, Okolie joined an elite list of British Cruiserweight champions.

Lawrence Okolie put on a stunning performance, at the SSE Arena in London, as he knocked out Poland’s Krzysztof Głowacki to claim the vacant WBO Cruiserweight title. He clinched victory in the sixth round with one huge right hand, as he joined an exclusive club of British cruiserweight world champions. With that win, the Lanky Brit is now 16-0 in his professional boxing career and is currently looking at unifying all the world titles.

Speaking at the post-fight interview Okolie revealed the time he had met his promoter and Matchroom Boxing CEO Eddie Hearn, as a boy with huge ambitions. He also called out Mairis Briedis and expressed his desire to move to the heavyweight division afterwards.

‘If you win a world title, I’m gonna get you a gold Sky-Dweller‘ – Eddie Hearn to a young Lawrence Okolie back in the day

Okolie was quoted as saying, “Throughout the whole fight, all I was thinking was one thing. Four years ago, Eddie Hearn saw a boy from Hackney and said to him, ‘If you win a world title, I’m gonna get you a gold Sky-Dweller.’ Every single moment in that ring, that’s all I was thinking. It went exactly to plan. I said I’d get it done between rounds five-eight. I knew he was struggling to catch up with me. So it was difficult for him to make the decision to get up.”

Before expressing his desire to move to the heavyweight, Okolie called Briedis out, “Briedis is the one I am looking for,” he said.

Well, Okolie is planning on doing an Oleksandr Usyk. Usyk dominated the cruiserweight division, and recently moved to the heavyweight division and has already made a name for himself in the heavyweight division as well. Okolie would be looking forward to doing exactly the same.

Can Lawrence Okolie go on to become a force to be reckoned with?
