‘He just doesn’t have the knowledge of takedown defence that allowed him to stay up’ – Daniel Cormier and Ariel Helwani dissect the Kevin Holland vs Derek Brunson fight
Kevin Holland’s winning streak came to an end as he was completely outclassed by Derek Brunson.
Kevin ‘Big Mouth’ Holland’s five match winning streak came to an end, as he was stopped by an experienced Derek Brunson in the main-event of UFC Vegas 22. Kevin Holland, came into the fight brimming with confidence, as he had an unbelievable 2020 (5 wins out of 5 in double-quick time), but he was completely outwrestled by the number 7 ranked Brunson, who won the fight via unanimous decision (49-45, 49-46, 49-46)
Speaking about the fight in the recent episode of DC & Helwani MMA show, Ariel Helwani questioned Daniel Cormier if he believed Kevin Holland would have fared differently had he kept quiet, instead of being mouthy throughout the fight. Cormier wasted no time in saying that the fight would have gone the same way; DC supported his answer saying that Kevin Holland was completely clueless about Derek Brunson’s perfectly executed takedowns.
‘He hasn’t shown that ability yet, to defend those takedowns at those level‘ – Daniel Cormier
DC was quoted as saying, “I can say, I don’t think so, because he would have just been quietly getting taken-down. He hasn’t shown that ability yet, to defend those takedowns at those level. It’s not like he was talking in the middle of getting taken down, he was trying to defend, he just doesn’t have the knowledge of takedown defence that allowed him to stay up. I don’t think if he was quiet it would have made much of a difference.”
He concluded, “It would not have been different because he doesn’t really understand takedown defence at a level, that would allow him to stop a guy like Derek Brunson who is just a fascinating long-time veteran.”
Kevin Holland’s inability to defend Brunson’s takedowns were very evident throughout the match. The talented number 10 ranked middleweight contender will have to work on it as DC mentioned, and couple it with the striking skills he has been blessed with.
